Written Answers. - School Transport.

[682] 649. Mr. F. Fahey asked the Minister for Education the total financial allocation made to CIE for the provision of school transport in County Galway in 1982.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): CIE audited accounts of its costs for operating the school transport scheme are on a national and not on a county basis. The information requested by the Deputy is, accordingly, not available.

650. Mr. F. Fahey asked the Minister for Education if she will remove the operation of school transport from CIE in County Galway for a one year period and appoint a Transport Board in each school catchment area comprised of school authorities and parents with the same financial allocation as that being given to CIE to organise school transport within their own catchment.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): The question whether alternative arrangements for the operation of the school transport scheme should, or could, be made is a matter for consideration in the context of the overall review of the school transport scheme which is taking place at present.

651. Mr. F. Fahey asked the Minister for Education the result of pilot schemes carried out in the past two years involving private enterprise in the provision of school transport.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): Pilot schemes involving private enterprises in the provision of school transport have not been carried out in the past two years.
