[726] 860. Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Education the reasons persons (details supplied) in County Offaly had to pay £50 for school transport per quarter.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): The three children in question reside in the Tullamore catchment area and avail of catchment boundary transport to Portarlington post-primary centre. Accordingly, the appropriate term fare is £24 per child per term, subject to a maximum family payment of £50 per term.

861. Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Education the reason the children of medical card holders who live outside a particular school catchment area have to pay for school transport.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): Where parents or legal guardians of children are medical card holders, they may be excused the contribution in respect of any of their children who are eligible for school transport and who attend school in their appropriate post-primary education centre.

This concession is intended to enable [727] eligible pupils to continue to attend their appropriate post-primary centre in cases where their families might not be in a position to afford the contribution towards school transport from their area to that centre. It is not proposed to extend this concession to pupils who opt to attend a centre other than their appropriate one.
