Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Justice the position in regard to prisoners sentenced under the Offences Against the State Act in relation to (i) remission of sentence, (ii) facilities for education and (iii) accommodation in jail. Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East) Michael Noonan Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): Persons convicted under the Act referred to qualify for remission of sentence to the same extent as any other prisoners, that is, they may earn remission of up to one fourth of any sentence in excess of one month's imprisonment. The prisoners in question are accommodated in Portlaoise and Limerick Prisons. At present the prisoners in Portlaoise and Limerick Prisons are facilitated in engaging in a wide range of educational courses and special library facilities are provided. Proposals for courses in each of the two prisons to be conducted by specialist teachers have been elaborated and it is expected that they will begin shortly. Dáil Éireann 342 Written Answers.
