Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice if and when he intends to introduce a system of community policing as recommended by the Garda who are acutely aware of the situation; if not, why, in view of the accelerating rate of crime and urban violence in large centres of population; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): I presume that the Deputy is referring to the system of community policing recommended in the discussion paper produced recently by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors. The system proposed and other possible means of combating the present serious crime problem are being considered by the Garda Commissioner and of course I will be glad to give my fullest attention to any proposals he may make as a consequence.
