271. Mr. F. Fahey asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider an application for a licence to operate an artificial insemination service from one farmer in County Galway.

Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Lenihan): The practice of artificial insemination for livestock is controlled in this country by the Lifestock (Artificial Insemination) Act, 1947, and the Live-stock [1135] (Artificial Insemination) Regulations, 1948.

Nine specialist organisations are licensed and these provide a comprehensive AI service for the entire country. I am not satisfied that it would be in the best interests of the livestock industry that further licences be issued at this time.
