994. Mr. J. O'Leary asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of a report in the media (details supplied) regarding the alleged pollution of the Lakes of Killarney; the present position regarding the proposed improvement and extension of the present sewerage disposal treatment unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

995. Mr. Begley asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement in relation to the pollution at Killarney Lakes, County Kerry.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Raphael Burke): With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 994 and 995 together.

I have seen the newspaper report referred to by the Deputy. In December 1981 my Department conveyed sanction to the recommended tenders for the [1362] mechanical plant and the sludge dewatering plant in order to facilitate completion of planning of the civil works for the Killarney sewage treatment works augmentation scheme. I understand that the contract documents for the civil works have been completed by the consultant and are presently being examined by the urban district council's engineering staff.
