[592] 459. Mr. Harte asked the Minister for Agriculture the reason for the delay in paying suckler cow grants to farmers in County Donegal.

Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Lenihan): Due to an initial poor response to the 1981 suckler cow grants scheme, it was necessary to extend the closing date from 10 July 1981 to 11 August and to further extend it to 15 October. This meant that the six months retention period did not end for some applicants until April 1982. Payments commenced on 30 April 1982. By 3 May 54 per cent of the total applicants in County Donegal were paid. Payments are continuing and the rest of the Donegal applicants whose applications are in order will be paid shortly.
