319. Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his Department investigated the reported sighting of two submarines off the Waterford coast several months ago; if their presence was notified in advance to his Department by their country of origin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Foreign Affairs (Professor Dooge): My Department has not received reports of any sightings of submarines off the Waterford coast. From the Deputy's question it would appear that he is referring to a report in The Cork Examiner of 9 December 1981 where it is clearly indicated that the vessels in question were sighted well beyond Irish territorial waters.
