Dr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Labour if he will indicate if respect of the National Manpower Service (a) the 1980 budgetary provisions for this service (b) the number of staff it employs (c) the number of people at present registered with it and (d) the proportion of those that succeeded in obtaining employment through this service.

Minister for Labour (Mr. G. Fitzgerald): (a) 1980 Budgetary provision for salaries, and allowances, £2,560,000. (b) No. of staff—Field staff, 341; H.Q. staff, 94—435. (c) At the end of September this year there was a total of 82,448 persons registered with the National Manpower Service. (d) The majority of NMS registrants are unemployed. A small proportion of registrants is employed. The persons concerned are registered with the service for the purpose of changing their employment. A proportion of these would have been placed in employment by the National Manpower Service but would have expressed a wish to remain on the NMS register.
In the period from January to the end of September this year a total of 20,988 job-seekers were placed in employment through the National Manpower Service.
