Collins asked the Minister for Education the steps he intends to take to introduce courses in computer studies to second-level schools and when it will become an examination subject. Wilson Minister for Education (Mr. Wilson): I have set up a departmental committee to advise me on the question of introducing computer studies into the curriculum of post-primary schools. In the interim, in order to facilitate those schools which are already working in the area of computer studies, or are planning to do so, I have arranged for the introduction of an optional section on computer studies in the leaving certificate examination syllabuses in mathematics in respect of the school year 1980-81, and until further notice. 1394 [1394] This section is optional. It will not form part of the leaving certificate examination but pupils who take it, and perform satisfactorily, will be given a statement to that effect by my Department.
