301. Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number awaiting telephones in Portarlington, County Laois, and when they can expect to be offered the service.

Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (Mr. Faulkner): The number is 101. These will be offered service on a progressive basis following the extension towards the end of this year of the trunk exchange at Portlaoise on which Portarlington exchange depends for switching trunk calls.

302. Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Eden-derry exchange will be made automatic; the number of applicants for telephones in this area, and when they can expect to be connected.

Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (Mr. Faulkner): The exchange is scheduled for conversion to automatic working within the next two months. It [1945] is expected that most of the 103 waiting applicants will be given service within the following few months and the balance over the remainder of the year.
