Mr. Horgan asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in relation to each vocational education committee (a) the amount of money last requested by the committee for scholarships; (b) the amount allocated in response to such requests; and (c) the reason for any discrepancy between the figures in each case.

Minister for Education (Mr. Wilson): The financial assistance originally requested by Vocational Education Committees in the area of student support in [399] 1978 and the amounts subsequently allocated on the basis of requirements by my Department are shown on the attached schedule. The figures in both cases include assistance by way of scholarship and assistance by way of grant in respect of courses receiving financial support from the European Social Fund.

[400] Differences between the amounts originally requested and the amounts subsequently allocated on the basis of more accurate information may arise through difficulties of estimation and the failure of certain courses to materialise through lack of demand. Sufficient funds are made available in all cases to enable committees to meet their commitments in the area of student support.
