Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condensed Milk Imports.
Mr. Daly Mr. Daly Dr. Gibbons Dr. Gibbons
32. Dr. Gibbons and Mr. Daly asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the large amounts of sweetened and unsweetened condensed milk that are imported into the State; if he will explain why the native dairying industry is not able to meet this demand; and if he has made any proposals to the industry which will induce it to develop to meet the demand.
Mr. M.P. Murphy Mr. M.P. Murphy
Mr. M.P. Murphy: The home market for condensed milk is very limited and I understand that, following the transfer of the plant owned by the Condensed Milk Company of Ireland to co-operative ownership, production of the product in this country ceased.
The filling of the limited home market demand for condensed milk is primarily a matter for consideration by the commercial interests concerned and the Industrial Development Authority are, I believe, proposing to discuss with those interests the possibility of having the product manufactured here again.
