Dáil Éireann - Volume 290 - 13 May, 1976 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Crash Course. Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher 1. Mr. Gallagher asked the Minister for Education the names of teachers who have been called for the crash course for untrained national teachers; the qualifications of each teacher in Irish, English and Mathematics; their dates of birth; the number of years teaching service; when inspectors visited the schools to report on their work; and the date on which dismissal notice was served on each teacher. Minister for Education (Mr. Richard Burke) Richard Burke Minister for Education (Mr. Richard Burke): It is presumed that the question relates to the untrained, unqualified teachers for whom an ex gratia crash course is being arranged. It is not the practice to give personal details of the kind asked in the question. The persons admitted to the course under the prescribed conditions, 38 in number, were among those to whom notices of dismissal, terminating their employment on 30th June, 1975, issued in March, 1975. The prescribed conditions were as follows: (a) that they be not less than 30 and not more than 55 years of age on 1st January, 1976, and (b) that they have given, in the aggregate, at least five years' service in respect of which salary was paid to them by my Department and (c) that they have been assessed as satisfactory in their school work. 1292 Provisional letters of acceptance issued to five others who were amongst those to whom notices of dismissal issued in March, 1975 and who complied with conditions (a) and (b) [1292] above. Their acceptance on the course is conditional on their being assessed as satisfactory by one of my Department's inspectors. Reports on these five are awaited. Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher: Do I take it from the Minister's reply that the conditions laid down have been fulfilled in the case of all the people who have been admitted for the training course or who are being admitted to the training course? Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke: Yes in respect of all the untrained, unqualified people for whom the course is being put up. Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher: Is it the Minister's intention to call any other teachers, any other groups for this course, or is this the end of the course? Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke: There are others who might be included—qualified, untrained people. Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher Mr. Gallagher: Do I take it that it is definite that this course is going ahead this year? Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke: The Deputy may take it that this is so. Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn: Will the Minister tell the House where it is proposed to have the course? Which training college has accepted the course? Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke Mr. Richard Burke: If the Deputy would ask me that in a separate question I will be delighted to furnish the information. Mr. O'Malley Mr. O'Malley Mr. O'Malley: Does the Minister not know? Dáil Éireann 290 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. Teachers' Crash Course. Questions 19760513
