131. Mr. Lemass asked the Minister [204] for Agriculture and Fisheries the research his Department have undertaken to ensure that the long term conservation of top soil will be maintained at a minimum of 250 mm to ensure the survival of the species which depend upon it.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (Mr. Clinton): The whole programme of soils research conducted by An Foras Talúntais is aimed at the conservation of soil and the maintenance and improvement of soil fertility both from the physical and chemical standpoints. The ultimate purpose of this work is to increase the quantity and quality of plant and animal species which depend on the land for their existence.
