Dáil Éireann - Volume 281 - 29 May, 1975

Ceiseanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Company's Women Employees.

33. Mr. Moore asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of the concern among single women workers in a company in Dublin (name supplied) who state that they are forced to work a three-day week due to the fact that married women who are not in need of the income are also employed there; and if he will have the matter investigated by a rights officer of his Department.

Mr. Tully: I understand that all the staff of the company in question resumed full-time working as from Monday, 12th May.

I would not be in favour of any action which would lead to discrimination against married women in employment.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: Question Time is over.

Mr. Moore: I accept that the first part of the Minister's reply is correct but I think there should be an adjustment because of the single women. Would the Minister ask the rights officer to investigate that side of the matter?

Mr. Tully: I would not recommend to the Minister that he should take action to discriminate against any worker.

[1295] Mr. Moore: Some of the single women are at work so as to be able to keep aged parents.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: Vote 49, Health, resumed. Deputy Dr. Gibbons to resume.

Mr. Tully: The National Manpower Service has been interviewing the workers to be made redundant with a view to seeking to place them in other employment or arranging for retraining by AnCO for those——

Mr. G. Fitzgerald: A Leas-Cheann Comhairle——

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: Question Time has finished. The Chair announced that and called Vote 49.

Mr. G. Fitzgerald: The Minister has answered Question No. 34.

Mr. Tully: I am sorry. I did not hear the Chair say that Question Time was over.

Mr. G. Fitzgerald: On a point of order——

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: The Chair did not call that question.

Mr. Tully: I should not have answered that question. I shall answer it or the Minister himself will answer it next day. That will be much better.

Mr. G. Fitzgerald: There is urgency about this matter.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: I cannot take it now. It is after Question Time.

Mr. Callanan: Owing to the unsatisfactory replies to Questions Nos. 2, 3 and 4 on today's Order Paper, I propose with the permission of the Chair to raise their subject matters on the Adjournment.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

Mr. G. Fitzgerald: And I also, with the permission of the Chair, would like to raise the subject matter of Question No. 32.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
