Mr. Lemass asked the Minister for Justice why the Garda-in-Service Training School in Dublin was closed at Christmas; if it has yet been reopened; and, if not, why. Minister for Lands (Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick, Cavan) (for the Minister for Justice): The Commissioner of the Garda Síochána has informed me that training had to be suspended in the in-service training school in December, primarily because of pressing demands on Garda manpower and Garda services. It is the intention [803] that either this training scheme or some variation of it will be resumed when the manpower situation permits. Meanwhile, the merits of various methods of providing such training will be examined fully either by the management consultants or otherwise. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: First, let me express the hope that the Minister for Justice is having an enjoyable time in the Seanad. Is the Minister saying that the Garda are understaffed?
