Dáil Éireann - Volume 280 - 30 April, 1975

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Schools' Grants.

17. Dr. Gibbons asked the Minister for Education the increase in grants he has sanctioned under the free education schemes for (a) St. Mary's College Complex, Boyle and (b) the post-primary schools in Roscommon; the date on which they will be payable; and whether they will be retrospective to 1st September, 1974.

Mr. R. Burke: The increase in grants which has been sanctioned under the free education scheme is £5 per pupil and it is operative with effect from the beginning of the 1974-75 school year in the case of all post-primary schools.

Dr. Gibbons: Does the Minister accept that amount is sufficient to meet the commitments of the schools at present?

Mr. R. Burke: It has been represented to me by numerous deputations that it is not.

Dr. Gibbons: Has the Minister anything further to offer them?

Mr. R. Burke: I have given the House an indication of a Government decision to increase the grants.

Mr. Wilson: Before June?

Mr. R. Burke: Would the Deputy try to pin me to June?

[792] Mr. Wilson: Yesterday the Minister said it would be before June.

Mr. R. Burke: We might even beat that.
