Dáil Éireann - Volume 263 - 15 November, 1972 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Breeding Cattle. Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton 45. Mr. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that, as a result of talks between the French and British Ministers for Agriculture on 16th October, the French Government are sending a special high level mission to Britain to examine the possibilities of purchasing in Britain selected cattle for reproductive purposes; and if he will take steps to ensure that this potentially valuable outlet is also availed of by Ireland. Mr. J. Gibbons Mr. J. Gibbons Mr. J. Gibbons: The answer to both parts of the question is “yes”. Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton: Could the Minister say what has been the result of his steps to ensure the potential value of an outlet in regard to the export of animals for breeding purposes? Mr. J. Gibbons Mr. J. Gibbons 1675 Mr. J. Gibbons: The Deputy is referring to contacts made between the British and French Ministers for Agriculture in relation to the wish of the French Minister to import a limited number of breeding cattle which I understand were Jersey and Friesian. These are very specialised breeds and I think the number of cattle of these breeds available for export is far greater in Britain than here. I doubt if [1675] we have any real pedigree exports in either of these breeds. Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton: Could the Minister say if he will be meeting the French Minister for Agriculture to discuss this matter with him, as Mr. Prior, the British Minister has done? An Ceann Comhairle Cormac Breslin An Ceann Comhairle: The remaining Questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper. Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan: An bhfuil a fhios ag an gCeann Comhairle nach raibh aon fhreagra amháin i rith na gceisteanna seo ón Aire Tionscail agus Tráchtála? An mbeidh an tseachtain seo chugainn, mar tá a lán ceisteanna le freagairt ag an Aire? An Ceann Comhairle Cormac Breslin An Ceann Comhairle: Ní ar an Aire atá an locht. Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan: Tá a fhios agam go bhfuil an tAire sa tSualainn. An Ceann Comhairle Cormac Breslin An Ceann Comhairle: Is iad na Teachtaí sa Dáil a choinnigh na ceisteanna ar gcúl. Mr. L'Estrange Mr. L'Estrange Mr. L'Estrange: An bhfuil a fhios ag an Teachta go mbeidh Tráth na gCeist ar siúil óna 2 a chlog go dtí a 6 a chlog amárach? Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan Mr. O.J. Flanagan: I realise that, but I should like to know if there is any hope that we will get replies from the Minister for Industry and Commerce. An Ceann Comhairle Cormac Breslin An Ceann Comhairle: If Deputies would expedite supplementary questions, the House would be able to deal with all questions tomorrow. Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick (Cavan) Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick (Cavan) Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick (Cavan): If Ministers gave sufficient information in the first instance it would not be necessary for Deputies to ask so many supplementary questions.
