Mr. Moore asked the Minister for Local Government the number of itinerant families housed by local authorities either in special settlements or in permanent dwellings throughout the country; and the total number for Dublin city. Mr. Cunningham Mr. Cunningham Mr. Cunningham: At least 658 itinerant families have been provided with accommodation by local authorities either on camping sites or in traditional houses during the past decade. The total number for Dublin city is 94 families, including two sites towards which Dublin county council contribute to the corporation. Dr. FitzGerald Dr. FitzGerald Dr. FitzGerald: Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the provision is totally inadequate in Dublin city, that there are many itinerants who cannot find accommodation in serviced sites, that the corporation are pursuing a campaign of taking summonses to evict them from areas without providing alternative accommodation and that on the last occasion this matter came before the court they were warned by the district justice not to come back with such inhumane—— An Leas-Cheann Comhairle Denis Francis Jones An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: Is the Deputy asking a question? I understand that [1752] every endeavour is being made to provide such accommodation in increasing numbers of housing units.
