Dáil Éireann - Volume 260 - 12 April, 1972 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Maternity Cash Grant. Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton 25. Mr. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if the rate of maternity cash grant will be increased from £4 to £8 during 1972-73. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: I propose to bring section 64 of the Health Act, 1970, into operation on the 1st October next. The effect of this will be to increase the present maternity cash grant from £4 per confinement to £8 for each child born alive, or—if there is not live issue —to £8 per confinement. Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton Mr. Bruton: Could the Minister tell me why there has been this delay in introducing this provision of an Act passed in 1970? Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: Simply because we have been implementing the Act by stages. I make no apology for the delay at all as long as we manage to implement most of the provisions of the Health Act in a reasonable period. Mr. Coogan Mr. Coogan Mr. Coogan: You have no money.
