Mr. Tully asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (a) the number of applications for the position of trainee installer received in response to the last advertisement; (b) the number called for interview; (c) the qualifications required by a candidate to be called for interview; and (d) by whom the selection was made.

[497] Mr. G. Collins: As the information required by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement, it is proposed, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann [498] Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

(c) Qualifications required by a candidate to be called for interview.	Candidates were called for interview: (i) who have obtained Leaving Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, or passes in at least two Group Certificate subjects (including at least one manual or technical subject e.g. woodwork, metal work, drawing) or the equivalent of any of these, since 1969 or
	(ii) who have obtained such Certificates, or equivalents, before 1969, but who have since been employed on manual work of a kind to suggest that they would make useful Trainee Installers or
	(iii) who do not hold such Certificates but who (a) have been employed on manual work of a kind to suggest that they would make useful Trainee Installers, and/or (b) have special interests (e.g. amateur radio) of a kind that seems useful or
	(iv) who are existing employees of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
(d) By whom was the selection made.	By screening boards composed of officers of my Department.

Mr. Tully: Would the Minister not agree if a young man goes to the trouble of applying that at least he should be entitled, unless it is quite obvious he is unsuitable, to an interview, no matter how big the number is?

Mr. G. Collins: There were 2,499 applicants of which 1,531 were called for interview. There were qualifications required of each candidate before they were called for interview. If the Deputy likes I can read them out to him.

Mr. Tully: They will be given in the Official Report.

Mr. G. Collins: I have been advised by my Department that all those who had the necessary qualifications were called for interview.

Mr. Tully: If I give the Minister details of somebody who says he had the necessary qualifications and was not called for interview will he look into it?

Mr. G. Collins: If the Deputy will give me that information and he has the qualifications he will certainly be called for interview.
