Dáil Éireann - Volume 251 - 09 February, 1971 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Drainage. Mr. Meaney Mr. Meaney 30. Mr. Meaney asked the Minister for Finance the position in regard to the drainage of the rivers Toon and Buingea, County Cork. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: A drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 for the Rivers Toon and Buingea has been investigated by the Commissioners of Public Works, but because of other very urgent commitments throughout the country it is not possible to say when operations upon those rivers can be undertaken. Mr. Creed Mr. Creed Mr. Creed: Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware if they are even on a list? Is he aware that a large number of farmers in the area are deprived of land project grants because of the manner in which the river has silted up and restricted the outflow of drains from the lands adjoining? Could he give an indication if this drainage is even on the list? Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: As I have tried to point out several times in this House, in view of the nature of our financial commitment on major schemes I am most reluctant to give dates for any of these intermediate schemes. I cannot give any undertaking whatever on the intermediate schemes at this time. Mr. Creed Mr. Creed Mr. Creed: Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me if this scheme was ever on the list? Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: It is not a question of a list in this case. A number of intermediate schemes have been considered and when money is available to do them, we shall do them.
