76. Mr. L. Belton asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of special training, if any, given to men [874] and women joining the prison service; and if his Department has examined training methods in other countries.

Mr. O'Malley: The appointment of a training officer to my Department was sanctioned by the Minister for Finance in 1969 and since then newly appointed officers in the prison service have received instruction in training courses. The latest course was one of three weeks duration, comprising instruction, discussion and practical demonstration.

Selected officers of my Department will shortly visit Britain to make a further study of training methods there.
