Collins asked the Taoiseach the number on the live register in Waterford city as at 1st June, 1969, 1st January, 1970, and 1st June, 1970. Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach (Mr. Andrews) David Andrews Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach (Mr. Andrews): The numbers on the live register residing in Waterford County Borough at dates nearest to those mentioned by the Deputy were: At 30 May, 1969, 673; at 2nd January, 1970, 727; at 29th May, 1970, 823. Mr. E. Collins Mr. E. Collins Mr. E. Collins: Can the Parliamentary Secretary explain the increase in the numbers on the live register during that period? Mr. Andrews Mr. Andrews Mr. Andrews: The bulk of the increase can be attributed to the cement strike which is taking place at the moment. The record in Waterford is a very proud one. Mr. E. Collins Mr. E. Collins Mr. E. Collins: There is grave dissatisfaction among the trade unions about the employment situation in Waterford city. Mr. Andrews Mr. Andrews Mr. Andrews: The fact that the IDA have purchased another 60 acres of land in Waterford in order to expand the industrial estate there shows a marked confidence in the future of industry in Waterford. Collins: I hope so Mr. Andrews Mr. Andrews 788 [788] Mr. Andrews: If the Deputy looked at the figures he would see that 930 persons were in new employment during the period 1969-70 and this is a considerable improvement.
