Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Rent Allowance.

26. Mr. L'Estrange asked the Minister for Justice the period for which a rent or separation allowance is paid to a garda on transfer; and if in view of the shortage of houses he will consider extending the period.

Mr. Moran: A married garda who on transfer is separated from his family may be paid lodging allowance for a [1214] flexible period. The normal maximum period is eighteen months, but this may be extended if the circumstances justify such a course.

I have received no representations from within the Force that the present arrangement is inadequate. As the Deputy is aware, a Commission is at present inquiring into Garda pay and conditions of service.

Mr. L'Estrange: Does the same rule and regulation apply to officers— superintendents and chief superintendents for example?

Mr. Moran: Yes.
