Dáil Éireann - Volume 233 - 02 April, 1968

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking Fines.

33. Mr. M. O'Leary asked the Minister for Justice the total amount of fines collected since the introduction of on-the-spot parking fines; and the number of gardaí who are assigned to this task in Dublin.

[1491] Mr. Moran: The total amount received in my Department from 1st April, 1963, when the scheme commenced, to 31st March, 1968, was £234,636. This does not include money paid into Garda stations last month and not yet remitted to the Department.

Every sergeant and garda on duty in uniform in Dublin carries “fine-on-the-spot” notices. Some gardaí, however, are allocated as their primary task the enforcement of the traffic regulations, including the operation of the fine-on-the-spot scheme. The daily average of the gardaí on this duty in Dublin since the scheme was introduced has been 34.

Mr. Corish: Would the Minister say, of the £200,000 odd, what proportion has been collected in Molesworth Street where there is indiscriminate parking?

An Ceann Comhairle: That is a separate question.

Mr. Moran: I have not that information.

Mr. Corish: I did not expect the Minister to have it. I only tried to stress the matter of indiscriminate parking in Molesworth Street.

Mr. Ryan: When six gardaí are put on the gate at Leinster House, could they not ensure that steps will be taken to enable Deputies to reach this House——

An Ceann Comhairle: That is a separate question. Question No. 34.
