Dáil Éireann - Volume 232 - 13 February, 1968 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Telephone Kiosks. Mr. Gilhawley Mr. Gilhawley 19. Mr. Gilhawley asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the urgency of having a telephone kiosk erected in the village of Coolaney, County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: The provision of a kiosk at Coolaney is being examined in connection with this year's kiosk programme. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: While I appreciate the circumspect character of the Minister's reply, the people of Coolaney assume that the declaration of his intention to consider it means he is going to give them a kiosk in Coolaney. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: I cannot say. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: What does the Minister mean, he is considering it? Do we not all know the circumstances in Coolaney by this time? It is there for some 700 years. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: Every year we put up something like 150 to 200 kiosks—I cannot remember the exact number— in accordance with an expanding programme in regard to the use of the telephone service. Coolaney is one of the places we are considering in connection with the kiosk programme this year. I cannot say more than that. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: I interpret the Minister's reply as saying he is satisfied a kiosk is required in Coolaney and as soon as he has the money, he will put one in Coolaney. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: It is a question of going through a programme of priorities. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: The Minister thinks there ought to be one there and when he has the dough he will put it there. Mr. Gilhawley Mr. Gilhawley 880 20. Mr. Gilhawley asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will [880] have a telephone kiosk erected outside Skreen post office, County Sligo to facilitate people with late calls for clergy, doctors and others. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: The provision of a kiosk at Skreen is being examined in connection with this year's kiosk programme. Mr. Fahey Mr. Fahey 21. Mr. Fahey asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the provision of additional telephone kiosks in Tipperary town as requested by the urban district council. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: The question of providing additional telephone kiosks in Tipperary town is being considered in connection with this year's programme. The urban district council was advised accordingly. Mr. Fahey Mr. Fahey 22. Mr. Fahey asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if in view of the increases in population in the Old Bridge area, Clonmel, County Tipperary he will have a public telephone kiosk provided there. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: A kiosk in the area in question will be provided this year. Mr. Kennedy Mr. Kennedy 23. Mr. Kennedy asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he hopes to have a public telephone kiosk erected at Kilmore village, County Wexford. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: A kiosk is not warranted at Kilmore. Mr. Corish Mr. Corish Mr. Corish: On what grounds is it unwarranted? Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: The call office telephone in Kilmore post office is available to the public until 9 p.m. and is used only to a small extent. Emergency callers are facilitated at all times. Mr. Corish Mr. Corish Mr. Corish: Would this include fishermen who need to make a call? Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: I imagine it would. Emergency callers are facilitated at all times. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon 881 24. Mr. Dillon asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he proposes to provide a telephone kiosk [881] in Lisdoonan village in County Monaghan. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: A kiosk in Lisdoonan is not warranted. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: As this is in the Minister's constituency, I am surprised he should imagine some public telephone facilities are not warranted in Lisdoonan. The people badly need a kiosk, and I do not know if they have any other facilities available to them in that area. They certainly tell me they want one. Mr. Childers Mr. Childers Mr. Childers: I shall have another look at it. Mr. Corish Mr. Corish Mr. Corish: I should think so. Dáil Éireann 232 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers.
