Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Acceptance of Leaving Certificate in Britain.

110. Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Education if he will initiate negotiations with his counterpart in Great Britain with a view to having the leaving certificate accepted as an equivalent entrance qualification to the advanced level GCE for entry into universities and professional grades in Great Britain.

Mr. Colley: The programme and examination structure for the Leaving [752] Certificate differ considerably from those of the General Certificate of Education. The Irish course and examination are geared to Irish conditions and requirements and I do not think that it would be appropriate to take action on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
