Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Work Warnings.
Mr. Briscoe Mr. Briscoe
5. Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that after dark during recent bad weather lanterns placed on barrels warning motorists of road works in progress were extinguished, with the consequent danger of serious accidents; and if in order to lessen this danger he will take immediate steps to ensure that barrels placed around road works are painted with luminous paint.
Minister for Local Government (Mr. Boland) Kevin Boland
Minister for Local Government (Mr. Boland): As regards the first part of the Deputy's question, I am not so aware. If, however, the Deputy would give me more precise information I will have the matter taken up with the road authority concerned.
As regards the second part of the Deputy's question, my Department has in fact had under consideration the general question of improving the indications given at road works and intends to study some specific devices in conjunction with An Foras Forbartha. I understand that the particular solution suggested by the Deputy is not practicable, since there is no suitable luminous paint for this particular purpose.
Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon
Mr. Dillon: Whatever about the barrels, would the Minister consider taking some measures to ensure that large pantechnicons, particularly those that travel two together on one haulage unit, will carry on their back some luminous warning to protect vehicles overtaking them?
Mr. Boland Mr. Boland
Mr. Boland: There is scope for improvements in that regard also.
