28. Mr. Corry asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that some seven houses in good condition, the property of his Department, are at present untenanted on Spike Island, Cobh; and if in view of the extreme housing shortage in Cobh he will take immediate steps to have the houses let to suitable applicants.

Minister for Defence (Mr. Hilliard): The only vacant houses in Spike Island are married quarters which may be allocated to serving personnel of the Permanent Defence Force. For military [2132] reasons, none of those houses can be made available for letting.

Mr. Hilliard: It has nothing to do with it, but security is a thing that must be maintained also.

Mr. James Tully: Surely the Minister is not serious when he says——

Mr. Hilliard: I said it has nothing to do with security, but speaking generally security is a matter that has to be given consideration also. It is not a laughing matter.
