108. Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of each of the last five years the number of members of the Defence Forces charged with being absent without leave, and the number of persons so charged who were convicted.

Minister for Defence (Mr. Bartley): Records are not available in a form which would enable the information requested by the Deputy to be furnished precisely. I propose with your permission, A Cheann Comhairle, to have circulated in tabular form in the Official Report information which is available on the subject and which will, I trust, be of assistance to the Deputy.
Following is the information:  TRIALS of members of Óglaigh na hÉireann on charges of absence without leave and desertion.
(1) The figure of 2,211 in Column (2) is in respect of the period 1 Eanáir to 30 Meán Fómhair, 1962, the latest date for which figures are available. The figure of 80 in Cols. (3) and (4) is in respect of the period 1 Eanáir to 9 Samhain, 1962.
(2) The figures in Column 2 include trials in respect of all types of absences without leave, e.g., absences off duty parades.
(3) The figures in Column 2 represent the number of trials as distinct from the number of men involved. The figures include more than one trial in the case of certain men.
