Mr. Coughlan asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider permitting inmates of industrial schools to go home for a short holiday at Christmas, if desired, in addition to the holidays which they are permitted during the summer. Dr. Hillery Dr. Hillery Dr. Hillery: As the Deputy is aware, children in industrial schools are, where circumstances permit, allowed home for the summer holidays. In exceptional circumstances where a school manager is satisfied that the best interests of one of these children would be served by extending this privilege to Christmas, this has been done. It will be appreciated that in all cases the privilege of home leave must be left entirely to the discretion of the school manager. Dáil Éireann 192 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers.
