38. Mr. Russell asked the Taoiseach if he will give the figures for emigration for each of the years 1950 to 1959.

[891] The Taoiseach: As has been stated in the replies to previous Parliamentary Questions on this subject, it is not possible to obtain figures for total emigration from the State. Reliable estimates of net emigration can, however, be made but only for the periods between Censuses of Population. The latest such estimate relates to the five year period between the 1951 and 1956 Censuses in which net emigration amounted to 196,763 persons.
