Dáil Éireann - Volume 178 - 10 December, 1959

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eligibility for Appointment of National Teacher.

100. Mr. Blowick asked the Minister for Education if he will state if a national teacher (name supplied) is eligible for appointment at present; and, if not, why; and whether this teacher is qualified or will qualify for pension.

Dr. Hillery: In view of the age of the person concerned and of the fact that he has not served in a national school since 1935 he is not now eligible for recognition in any capacity in a national school. He does not qualify for the award of a pension under the National School Teachers' Superannuation Schemes.

Mr. Blowick: Do I understand the Minister to say he has passed the age at which he could be re-employed?

Dr. Hillery: Yes.

Mr. Blowick: Why does he not qualify for a pension on his former service?

[1298] Dr. Hillery: The rules in question require that on retirement a person will have reached the age of 60 or have at least 35 years' service.

Mr. Blowick: If he had not 35 years' service, he does not qualify?

Dr. Hillery: Or reached the age of 60 with 10 years' service.

Mr. Blowick: I think I am correct in stating he had 10 years' service.

Dr. Hillery: If he has 10 years' pensionable service, has reached the age of 60 and then retires, he would be eligible for a pension.
