Dáil Éireann - Volume 168 - 22 May, 1958 Business of Dáil. An Ceann Comhairle Patrick (Clare) Hogan An Ceann Comhairle: I understand that all the stages of the Garda Síochána Bill, 1958, will be taken after questions. General Mulcahy General Mulcahy General Mulcahy: I have no objection. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: Could the Tánaiste say what has been decided about next week's sittings! An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass 637 [637] An Tánaiste: Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. Norton Mr. Norton Mr. Norton: Will we have the Transport Bill on Wednesday? There is now a substantial collection of amendments. An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: I think that may be taken on Wednesday evening about 7 or 8 o'clock—not earlier. Mr. Norton Mr. Norton Mr. Norton: Possibly later? An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: Possibly later. I think it would be desirable to have the Bill through the Committee Stage before the Estimate for the Department comes on. It would save some unnecesssary debate on the Estimate. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: We are getting into difficulties with regard to Bills. What about the Finance Bill? The Transport Bill has passed its Second Stage. Would it not be better to get the Second Stage of the Finance Bill before the Committee Stage of the Transport Bill? Mr. Norton Mr. Norton Mr. Norton: Is the Tánaiste afraid of a duplication of discussion on transport? An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: I think that if we took the Estimate for the Department before the Bill, there inevitably would be a duplication of discussion to some extent. It is important that the Bill should start on its progress towards the Statute Book because the G.N.R. Bill has to come along shortly afterwards. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: This Session? An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: This Session. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: Does the Tánaiste not think the Government should wake up with regard to legislation if it is to go through this Session? Mr. Norton Mr. Norton Mr. Norton: Why should they wake up? An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: There is every sign. that we are wide awake and very active. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: I do not know the signs. An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass 638 [638] An Tánaiste: The number of Bills coming along is surely one sign. Dr. Esmonde Dr. Esmonde Dr. Esmonde: What are the hours for Thursday next? An Tánaiste Seán F. Lemass An Tánaiste: 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman Mr. Sweetman: Special trains for the West thereafter. Dáil Éireann 168 Business of Dáil. General Debate 19580522
