Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensions Allowances.

Mr. Gogan asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (a) the number of applications for allowances under the Army Pensions Act, 1953, which have been received by his Department, (b) the number successful, (c) the number of cases in which payment is being made, and (d) the number of cases in which decisions have not yet been reached, and the reasons for the delay.

Minister for External Affairs (Mr. Cosgrave) (for the Minister for Defence): The Deputy's question is taken to relate to applications for allowances under Part II of the Army Pensions Act, 1953. On that basis the figures sought are as follows:—

(a) 649

(b) 244

(c) 194

(d) 141

[925] The difference between the figures at (b) and (c) is accounted for by deaths.

The delay in having decisions reached in the outstanding cases is due to the nature and extent of the examination necessary in order to determine whether the applications come within the terms of the Act.
