Mr. J. Larkin asked the Minister for Health if he will state the total number of applications received for maternity grants under the Health Act, 1953, and the number of grants paid.

Mr. Corish: According to the most recent information available to my Department which relates to the period from the commencement of the scheme (1st January last) to 31st May, 1954, the total number of applications received by the appropriate local authorities was 13,115. Of this number 8,735 applications were allowed and 2,104 applications were still under consideration at the latter date.
