Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reconstruction of Cobh Pier.
Mr. Corry Mr. Corry
Mr. Corry asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been directed to the failure of the Cork Harbour Commissioners to proceed with the reconstruction of Cobh town pier which was condemned as dangerous and unsafe by the commissioners' engineer in 1937 and if he is aware that the pier has to be used daily by the workers in Irish Steel, Ltd., and by residents on the island; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to compel the harbour commissioners to carry out their legal obligations to make this pier safe.
Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass
Mr. Lemass: The Harbours Act 1946 imposes on harbour authorities the duty of maintaining the harbour works under their control. The Cork Harbour Commissioners are the authority responsible for Cobh town pier and any representations concerning its condition should be made direct to that body.
I may say that the Cork Harbour Commissioners have informed me that such repairs as are necessary to keep the town pier suitable for the traffic using it have been carried out from time to time and that the pier was not condemned as dangerous and unsafe by the harbour engineer.
