Mr. Sweetman asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the volume of consumption during the year 1952-53 of (1) tobacco; (2) imported wines; (3) imported spirits; (4) imported beer and stout; (5) home-distilled spirits, and (6) home-brewed beer and stout.

Mr. MacEntee: As particulars of consumption of the commodities mentioned are not available, I propose to give the figures of the net duty-paid quantities retained for home use. I must point out, however, that there is reason to believe that, in the case of certain of the commodities at least, consumption was in excess of these figures due to the using up without replacement of duty-paid stocks acquired prior to the Budget, 1952.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a tabular statement showing for the commodities concerned the approximate net duty-paid quantities [549] retained for home use in the year 1952-53. Following is the statement:—
