Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bere Island Works Scheme.

Mr. S. Collins asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate why work on the reconstruction of Bach-a-Laca, Bere Island, was suspended in view of the urgency of the work and the valuable employment given by it.

[1064] Mr. Donnellan: A scheme of improvements to the landing place at Bach-a-Laca, Bere Island, was sanctioned some months ago for execution by the county engineer. I understand that when he was about to start operations, dissatisfaction was expressed by the local users of the landing place with the scope of the works proposed, and he considered that it would be undesirable to proceed until he could discuss the plans with the engineer who prepared them. It is hoped that this discussion will take place shortly, when the matter will receive further consideration.

Mr. S. Collins: Are we to take it that, over a protracted period of two years and with constant repeated investigation by his Department, the scheme ultimately supplied and sanctioned has not met with the approval of the local people? Did his Department ever consult the local people and does he propose to do some work in Bere Island to deal with the unemployment problem there?

Mr. Donnellan: We prepared a scheme in consultation with the local county engineer and the people did not appear satisfied with it. The county engineer decided that the matter should be reconsidered, which will be done in the near future, and we hope to prepare a scheme that will be suitable to the local people.

Mr. S. Collins: In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I wish to raise this matter on the Adjournment.
