Mr. Cogan asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the urgent need for the rapid development of the pig producing industry, he can give a firm assurance that there will be no reduction in the prices paid to producers of bacon pigs for a period of at least four years.

Mr. Dillon: There will be an assured market for all the bacon we can supply to Great Britain during the four years to 30th June, 1952. This will fully safeguard the interests of pig producers, who will produce in the knowledge that up to 30th September, 1949, the price of 225/- per cwt. f.o.b. is available for bacon in the British market and thereafter prices to be fixed which at all times up to 1952 will not be less than the price paid for any bacon imported into Great Britain, quality for quality.

Mr. Cogan: Has the Minister got any assurance from the British Government that they will pay the same price for bacon imported from this country as they will be paying to their own producers?

Mr. Dillon: No.
