Dáil Éireann - Volume 111 - 08 June, 1948 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase of Sheep Population. Mr. Rooney Mr. Rooney Mr. Rooney asked the Minister for Agriculture what steps he proposes to take to effect a rapid increase in the sheep population of Ireland. Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: As the decline in sheep numbers is due, partly at least, to compulsory tillage in counties where sheep rearing is extensively practised, it is probable that the numbers will increase gradually according as compulsory tillage regulations are relaxed, especially if the present prices for sheep and mutton are maintained. Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J. Burke: Is the Minister aware that a number of sheep died during the severe winter of 1947? Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: I am so aware. Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J. Burke: Why did the Minister not say so? Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon Mr. Dillon: Sheep have been dying since the dawn of time. Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J. Burke Mr. P.J.
