Mr. Timoney Mr. Timoney
Mr. Timoney asked the Minister for Justice if he will state how many persons in Ireland during each of the years from 1927 to 1947, inclusive, were (a) tried for murder; (b) convicted of murder; and (c) executed following such conviction.
Minister for Justice (General MacEoin) Seán (Major-General) Mac Eoin
Minister for Justice (General MacEoin): Nineteen persons were executed for murder during the period mentioned. During the same period 27 persons who would otherwise have been executed for murder had their sentences commuted to penal servitude for life either by the Government or on the advice of the Government. A return dealing with the other aspects of the question is in course of preparation and I will communicate with the Deputy when the required information is available.
