Mr. O'Neill Mr. O'Neill
Mr. O'Neill asked the Minister for Lands if he will state if the trees on the lands of Kilmalooda, County Cork, were recently advertised for sale; if a saw mill owner named McCarthy tendered for same at the full controlled price; if any of the lots were sold to McCarthy; and, if not, who the purchasers were, and if they were all registered timber merchants in 1941; and if he will state why the tender of McCarthy for the whole of the lots was not accepted.
Minister for Lands (Mr. Derrig) Thomas Derrig
Minister for Lands (Mr. Derrig): Four lots of commercial timber in Kilmalooda wood on the Beamish estate, County Cork, were advertised for sale by the Land Commission in February, 1943. A number of tenders were received including one from Mr. William McCarthy, of the Electric Sawmills, Bandon, for the four lots and one from Mr. Jerome McCarthy, of Timoleague, for one of the lots. Three of the lots were sold respectively to: Messrs. J. Spiller and Co., Ltd., Clonakilty; Messrs. Harte and Son, Ltd., Cork; and Messrs. Barry and Sons, Ltd., Cork. All three firms were registered timber merchants in 1941. The fourth lot has not yet been sold and Mr. William McCarthy is among the persons or firms who are being considered as purchasers. There is a keen demand for these trees and the Land Commission have to decide on their most advantageous disposal in present circumstances. The Land Commission were not prepared to dispose of the four lots to any single purchaser.
