Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of a Residence.

Seosamh O Cinnéide asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps are being taken to provide John Smith, of Ballymanus, Castlepollard, County Westmeath, with a residence.

Mr. Boland: The question of providing building assistance for Mr. John [16] Smith is under consideration by the Land Commission, who have directed that a special report be made on his circumstances.

Mr. Bennett: Is the Minister aware that this particular holding was recently purchased by a neighbouring farmer who himself has five sons? Is the Minister prepared to advocate the acquisition of the holding by the Land Commission, under these circumstances?

Mr. Boland: I do not interfere in the acquisition of holdings at all. It is the Land Commission that deals with that matter, and I can assure the Deputy that before acquiring a holding they take all the circumstances into consideration.

Mr. Bennett: Perhaps the Minister would be good enough to intercede on behalf of this farmer?

Mr. Boland: I will convey the Deputy's views to the Land Commission. That is all I can do.
