Mr. MacDermot asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that there is widespread destruction of valuable and beautiful trees in the process [21] of land division, and whether any steps can be taken to stop such destruction.

Minister for Lands (Mr. G. Boland): The Land Commission is not aware of any widespread destruction of valuable and beautiful trees in the process of land division, nor would they countenance such destruction. The Land Commission and their allottees are subject to the restrictions on the cutting of timber imposed by the Forestry Act, 1928, and have to comply with the regulations under that Act. In the process of land division, for some years past, hundreds of shelter belts are being planted out of Land Commission Funds on the new holdings and enlargements allotted.

Mr. MacDermot: Arising out of the Minister's reply, I would ask him to take a look at what is happening in the plains of Boyle.

Mr. Boland: Well, if the Deputy had asked me to deal with a specific case, perhaps I could have dealt with it; but surely he does not expect me to go back to Boyle now and deal with it.
