Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Exports to Belgium.
Mr. Roddy Mr. Roddy
Mr. Roddy asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of hundred-weights of butter exported to Belgium since the 1st October last; the price per cwt. received from the sale of such butter and the amount of bounty paid by the Government in respect of such export.
Dr. Ryan Dr. Ryan
Dr. Ryan: I do not consider that it would be in the public interest to disclose the particulars asked for in respect of the exports of butter from this country to Belgium, which were carried out by the Dairy Disposal Company. I am prepared, however, to supply the Deputy privately with the information which he desires. I can state generally that the return from sales in Belgium was considerably higher than could have been obtained from sales in Great Britain, having regard to the tax on the imports of Saorstát butter into Great Britain, and that, apart from the subsidy on exports, sales in Belgium brought in at least 20/- per cwt. more than could have been obtained by sales in Great Britain.
